Aid to Sudan

We know that we are so ridiculously lucky and blessed to have the lives we have, where the next trip abroad, the next wave, the next smile from our surfing buddy, may be our most important concern.

What a harsh world of contrast however when we all know there is another reality, where basic survival is the main concern and this fact is faced daily and often hourly.

Surf School Lanzarote donates 6,000 Euros every year to aid projects in Sudan, these are run by Christian Aid.

It is good to know that we can all help in a positive way and it would be great if you thought about carrying on giving after your time with us.

The background to the conflict

It is not only Darfur where ongoing conflict continues to displace and kill people. Sudan has seen a difficult year as violence has escalated throughout 2009 and into 2010.

For many Sudanese, while the Comprehensive Peace Agreement brought hope of peace, they could not immediately begin rebuilding their lives. The country’s second civil war - one of the longest experienced by any African country - left two million dead, a further four million displaced and decimated infrastructure, particularly in the country’s south.

Many fled across Sudan’s borders into neighbouring countries including Uganda and Kenya. Others moved to areas within the country which seemed safer, sometimes resulting in apparently bizarre situations where people were both moving to and from particular towns to escape fighting.

Christian Aid is working with its partners to enable the people of Sudan to recover from decades of conflict and to look to a brighter future. This critical work is helping to rebuild food security and harvesting, to resolve conflict within communities, educate children and adults, and challenge the stigma of HIV as well as give support to those affected by the virus. Thank you for your support to the Sudanese people.
